good question mule, really, im glad you asked.

when i was living in new orleans, in 2006>2007, if i wasn't slaving on the line, drunk, or hiding from my (ex)girlfriend, i was listening to WWOZ. I guess one of the best things about WWOZ was that you could always just call up and be like yo man! what track was that. and you would get responses like : aw man! thats ballzack! straight off tha westbank! or that was my man skerik!
at nights there was (and probably still is) a show called the kitchen sink. one night i heard some crazy carnival style free jazz, well actually, i had heard this track played by the new orleans klezmer allstars a few weeks before, and while cruising around i heard the track on WWOZ! I called up, and the guy told me It's Albert Ayler! to which i replied I love this song! and he countered Everybody needs a little Albert Ayler in their life. truer words never spoken.

Stephen Malkmus has done a lot of cool things for me. He's one of the few favorites of mine that I've actually seen live (though most of the credit for that goes to my girlfriend). His music came into my life at just the right point, at a time when I was ready to give a less than conventional look at rock n' roll and music in general.

He also introduced me to this song, one of my favorites.

First off, let me go ahead and say that I think Wavves pretty much suck. All the reviews I'd come across before actually hearing the music made me really excited, and I guess that's the nature of the beast that is hype. "Roach encrusted pop-punk," "noise pop," etc. Generally speaking, those descriptions could be applied to a lot of the music I listen to (but by no means all of it). I felt like this could be the next album that would see a fair amount of playtime in my car, i-pod, whatever.

Upon my first opportunity to actually give Wavves a listen, I wasn't immediately put-off or disappointed. There were some things that the album definitely had going for it, a few strong hooks here and there and an attitude that seemed to say that Nathan Williams was writing from a similar mindset to my own. Lo-fi production, so much volume that the needles "pin" in the studio, creating a pretty nasty, distorted sound. But closer inspection revealed that the songs were mostly just drivel and not the diamond in the rough material I'd thought I was going to find.

Wavves soon after cancelled their European tour and Nathan Williams issued an online apology. But don't apologize, Nathan. Just step aside and make way for some band that's more worth my time and more worth the space dedicated to your band on Pitchfork.

When your album really isn't that good and when you don't really have the talent to put on a great live show, but you're still getting Strokes-like hype pushing you all over the world, and you act like that big of a dick due to drugs, alcohol or whatever, it's a supreme indicator that you need to keep your bedroom songs about "weed demons" and "beach goths" and lyrics like "I'm so bored" in the bedroom. Leave the world tours to bands that can actually play and are actually grateful for the opportunity to travel and make a living doing what they love. Fuck you Wavves. I guess I can exclude the drummer from all of this; He seems to be in earnest and actually tries to play/perform/give people their money's worth.

This rant is pretty much off the top of my head and not really altogether competent or fleshed out, but to conclude, I urge anyone who reads this to refrain from purchasing the Wavves album. Don't encourage Nathan Williams and his weak songs or his weak fucking haircut.

This is a pop classic from 1965 popularized by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. I find it uncharacteristically cool; note the monster riff that kicks in close to the beginning only drop off and never resurface. It's a great moment, and all the more special because it doesn't get run into the ground. The rest of the song is pure sugar gold even though it's about getting dumped and feeling shitty. Enjoy.

My friends and I all grew to be huge pavement fans during our formative years and we quickly took a liking to all the sonic treats Stephen Malkmus started cooking up when he went solo. With the release of his second album Pig Lib, my status as a hardcore fan was solidified forever. The initial pressing of that record included a bonus ep, and the songs quickly became hard to find and much sought after when the ep was discontinued. Over the years, I tried searching for them as individual mp3s but didn't have much luck. I craved to hear those songs as much as anything, especially when my friends told me how awesome the song "Old Jerry" was. Just yesterday, I got my greedy hands on that bonus ep. I'm reading about America's "great crime wave" during the earlier part of the 20th century. The years from around 1928-1935 when the FBI was born and saw its first real challenges. Men like John Dillinger, Pretty Boy Floyd, Al and Dock Barker, Machine Gun Kelley, Baby Face Nelson, and Clyde Barrow made murder, bank robbery, auto-theft, kidnapping, etc. look like great romantic fun to a lot of people, and changed the way our nation's government dealt with criminals and crime itself. Kidnapping for instance, was not a federal crime before this period, and investigations were often hindered by a lack of organization and cooperation between sparse local law enforcement groups.

The more and more I work, the more and more I find myself escaping to my own thoughts, what ifs, and just daydreaming whenever I can. I've been wearing these two tracks out lately. They are from none other than UK eighties synth popette La Roux...and they are straight fire.
She just put out a single on Kitsuné and on the release you can find the Quicksand : Autokratz Drags to Riches mix. I'll admit, its definitely the Autokratz touch that makes this track so hot, although the original is a nice listen too.

As far as Fascination, thats just my inner wuss that wants to be in love, and my affinity for all things eighties.

John Darnielle has been recording as The Mountain Goats with various artists since 1991. His recorded output is immense, and it continues to boggle my mind how someone could write so many great songs. His recording methods were originally lo-fi boom box affairs, though recent years have seen the Goats expand into a fuller studio sound. A friend once told me that he enjoyed artists and albums that sounded like they could be in the room with you playing and singing. That's a lot of what you get with The Mountain Goats. It's like you've got a really talented friend sitting in the room with you blowing your mind.

My friend told me about this guy Yussuf Jereusalem's album. It's his first album, the guy is from Paris, and apparently he does all of the instrumentation himself.

This is an AMAZING first record with incredible tracks, some of which feel comfortable and familiar, others are a bit more aggressive and evil. The album is available through the Floridas Dying label, who say that Yussuf Jereusalem's album is a

"Totally amazing first album. From the hate filled first two minutes of it and right through the next 28 minutes of sad doomy bedroom folk, cold drones, and beautiful weird pop. All killer no filler."

It's incredibly refreshing to find music like this. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I have.

We Ain't Coming Back is straight forward honest pop. Great old school instrumentation, vocals and love song lyrics. "All my life I was waiting for you, I didn't know it 'til today."

The End of Tomorrow is a bit heavier, more droning, but still extremely melodic and pleasing. The lo-fi sound and instrumentation here, again, is top-notch.

Every song from the album deserves to be posted. But it wouldn't be right.

After giving the track several listens today, im tempted to say that its better than the original? But also weary of saying that because its often only the original that stands the test of time, while the remixes fade into obscurity.
What makes this track so phat? One word, two syllables. CLAVE.
Twista's flow doesn't hurt either.

JJ Cale...the man behind such classics as Cocaine, After Midnight, They Call Me the Breeze. Eric Clapton, who made several of Cale's songs famous, said this of the man “In my humble opinion, he is one of the most important artists in the history of rock, quietly representing the greatest asset his country has ever had...”

I fell in love with JJ after hearing a live acoustic radio show he did at KFOG in San Francisco. Cale's vocals are raspy and breathy, and his guitar playing, immaculate. After getting to know these acoustic versions of Cale's songs, I sought out the originals. Who knew Cajun Moon was so seventies funky!

Closer To You has got Cale one upping Kanye and T.Pain with OG style use of autotune and ridiculous lyrics like "Wish I was your underwear hanging around your waist. Everytime you'd shake that thing I'd get a little taste."
